Deborah Lowe, the British teacher accused of sleeping with a pupil, has been cleared of underage sexual activity - but remains accused of five other charges.

The 53-year-old former flight attendant was accused of having sex with the student, who was a pupil at the school where she was in charge of pastoral care.

The mother-of-two exchanged WhatsApp messages with a friend - who joked about not having a boyfriend.

The court heard that her friend wrote in a message: "We can't all have a 17-year-old to s***!!! xxx."

Lowe replied: "Can I just say for a minute, I am not sh****** him. I am merely a mother figure.

"However, if in the not to distance future he wants to discuss the merits of an older woman, I will be there for him." (sic)

Lowe's friend said: "Yummy. Can't say I blame you.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Judge Hayhoe ordered a not guilty verdict on the charge of sexual activity with a child.

Lowe remains accused of five offences of sexual activity with a child by a person in a position of trust.

Lowe told Manchester's Minshull Street Crown Court: "I was flattered that he called me baby cakes. It was silly.

"I was flattered by the attention and flirting that a middle-aged woman had been called baby cakes by a younger man."

She denied that she had slept with the boy when the messages were sent back in October 2016, but admitted that they had sex two months later for the first time, when he had turned 17.

"We kissed and I am very embarrassed to say we ended up in bed together, which I regret," Lowe explained.

The court heard that Lowe had sex with the boy again in April 2017 and for a third time in June 2017.

She added: "I am mortified. I am embarrassed. I think I was having some sort of mid-life crisis. I have never done anything like this before.

"I don't know why I did it. I am so ashamed."

When Judge Hayhoe asked Lowe why she had signed a card to the boy with 'love you lots and lots, the slut', she explained: "Because when we had sex it was passionate and a little rough and he called me his slut."

She added: "It was only looking back I was mortified and embarrassed. At that time I was flattered he had shown me attention."

Lowe still denies five counts of sexual activity with a child by a person in a position of trust between April 2015 and June 2016.
