Met Office Predicts More Heavy Snow With Storm Emma This Week

If you’re in Scotland, you'll probably want to just stay inside and wait this out

You've probably spotted that it is a bit chilly out there just now. 'The Beast from the East' has been sweeping across Britain causing havoc for a lot of people pretty much everywhere.

Bitter cold, heavy snow and gale force winds have been drifting in from Scandinavia and Russia bringing temperatures of as low as -14C in parts of the Scottish highlands.

It's not going to be stopping any time either, with Storm Emma due to hit the UK tomorrow (Thursday 1 March). More than 1,000 schools across the country have been closed today, and the Met Office has now issued a 'severe' Red warning for parts of Scotland that lasts though until tomorrow morning.

The Met Office doesn't often issue Red warnings, so it's a pretty big deal. It means that extreme weather conditions are expected and that people should stay inside as much as possible.

As they explained: "Red means you should take action now to keep yourself and others safe from the impact of the weather.

"Widespread damage, travel and power disruption and risk to life is likely. You must avoid dangerous areas and follow the advice of the emergency services and local authorities."

The warning starts today at 3pm and will last until 10am tomorrow morning. It is thought that about 40cm of snow could fall in that time in the area covered by the warning.

More is to come later in the week as well as Storm Emma arrives from further south in Europe. This could mean more disruption across the south of the UK because of snow and ice.

The Met Office information added: "A spell of heavy snow is expected to move north across Southwest England and Wales through Thursday afternoon and evening.

"Some places could also see significant ice build-up overnight into Friday. The snow is likely to be accompanied by strong easterly winds.

"Long delays and cancellations to public transport is expected, whilst some roads may become blocked by deep snow, stranding vehicles and passengers. Long interruptions to power supplies and other utilities are likely to occur."

At least Storm Emma means that temperatures will get higher if you live down south. Up in the north it is going to stay freezing cold.

As is usually the case, Scotland will be the worst hit by all of this. According to the Met Office guidance for the area: "Heavy snow showers and drifting of lying snow in the strong easterly winds will become more widespread across the area later on Wednesday afternoon, through the evening and overnight into Thursday.

"Roads will become blocked by deep snow, with many stranded vehicles and passengers. Long delays and cancellations on bus, rail and air travel are expected.

"Some communities could become cut off for several days. Long interruptions to power supplies and other services."

Stay safe out there. Or, just stay inside and watch a film and wait for all of this to blow over.
