A woman has been taken to hospital after a 40ft Sainsbury's sign fell on top of her while she was outside.

The woman was walking down the street in Uplands, Swansea, when the giant illuminated shop sign came crashing 15ft down to the ground, hitting her on the head on its way down.

Thankfully, she is not believed to have suffered any serious injuries, but witnesses say that things could have gone so much worse, and that the sign could have easily killed her.

Local businessman Noah Redfern, who runs Noah's Yard opposite the store, spotted the incident and shared photos on social media with the caption: "Sainsbury's... Live Well For Less except when a shop sign lands on your head... hope the lady is OK could have been fatal.. just missed me!"

He said: "It could have been fatal. I was walking away from the shop when I heard a bang. The sign had come crashing down from the wall.

"Behind the sign it was all rotten and that seems to be why it fell. The woman was not seriously hurt - I think it skimmed her head but the ambulance were on their way.

"I was literally walking under it 10 seconds before and those signs are very heavy."

People commenting on his Facebook post were shocked by the pictures, saying it looked 'terrible' and 'horrific'.

One user wrote: "That's horrendous. Could have killed someone!"

Another said: "Imagine that landed on a child. Jesus, hope that woman's alright."

Ambulance crews were called to the scene shortly after 2pm on Tuesday, before the woman was then taken to hospital with head injuries.

Sainsbury's has since apologised to the woman, and also added that the store has had to be temporarily closed following the incident. The Mirror reported that staff have sectioned off the front of the shop with wet floor signs and trolleys to keep people out, though images show that more official-looking barriers have been put in place.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury's said: "We can confirm there was an incident at our Uplands Crescent store this afternoon.

"We sincerely apologise to our customer and are grateful to our colleagues for helping her.

"Safety is always our priority and we've temporarily closed the store while we make sure this can't happen again.

"We're working hard to reopen as quickly as possible and are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause."
