The co-founder of cycling giant Peloton says he drinks 40 handfuls of water every morning until he feels sick.

John Foley revealed that he was given the tip by an old workmate who said it was a great way of staying as hydrated as possible in the morning.

Speaking to The New York Times, the businessman admitted that it's something he took on board and really ran with.

The 49-year-old told the publication: "Twenty years ago a colleague told me the key to your day is to hydrate at much as you can, so the first thing I do is drink 40 sips of water from my hand at the upstairs bathroom sink.

"It's efficient. I drink until I feel like I'm going to throw up water. Every day."

I mean, hydration is obviously important, but I reckon if it brings you to the brink of chucking your guts up, it's probably a sign that you've taken things a little too far.

And since news of Foley's morning routine came to light, people online have responded, mocking the entrepreneur.

One person said: "Never mind the hand sips. Never mind the oddly specific tally. But literally saying it's efficient!?"

"This man's never heard of a water cup by the sink?? That'd be much more efficient just saying," pointed out another.

A third put: "Probably the least efficient way of drinking water."

While another chimed in: "John Foley not only admits to going to the sink to take 40 sips of water from his hand, but adds 'it's efficient'."

Now while it's vital to get as much H2O on board as possible, perhaps not to the point where we're about to spew, like, it's equally important that you're careful while doing so.

Last year, a guy warned people over the dangers of drinking incredibly cold water when it is extremely hot.

In a post on his Facebook account, Adam Schaub, from Houston, Texas, said he was working outside with his dad in scorching 37C heat when his face started to go a little pink - as you might expect.

His dad told him to take a quick break, so he grabbed a bottle of cold water and drank it. Then, after going back to work for a short while, he went and got in his truck to stick the air conditioning on and see off another bottle of cold water - and almost immediately started feeling 'strange'.

I started seeing spots, my stomach got extremely nauseous and my hands and feet started tingling," Adam said.

"I felt like I was going to throw up so I opened the truck door and the next thing I know I'm face first in the ground and my dad's rolling me over and wiping off my face. He said my eyes had rolled back a bit and I didn't come to for a few minutes."

The paramedic arrived and instantly knew what had happened, and told Adam exactly what had caused his seemingly harmless bottle of water to leave him looking like he'd taken a punch from Mike Tyson.

He said downing a bottle of cold water when the body is too hot can send it into shock. It thinks the stomach is too cold so it sends the warmer blood down there, potentially causing a loss of consciousness.
