An elderly man who hadn't eaten for a week after self-isolating alone due to fears he had coronavirus has sadly passed away, according to the kind-hearted nurse who helped him.

Lucy Duncan was driving home from a shift at Wigan Infirmary on Thursday when a car bumped into hers.

Inside the car was a 73-year-old man who desperately reached out to Lucy to tell her he thought he had contracted the potentially deadly virus and that he had been isolating at home alone for more than a week, without food.

Lucy said the man had no support network to call upon to get him the essentials.

The 24-year-old called an ambulance for the man and followed him in her car.

The dedicated mental health nurse than stayed with the man and tried to comfort him, however, yesterday she received a call to tell her he had sadly passed away.

Lucy, who went viral after sharing her story, gave the tragic update to the Manchester Evening News saying: "It's really upsetting, but I know that I managed to get him the help he needed.

"I know I improved the way he died because he could have been in his flat and not been found for days - or longer."

She went on to say although they had only spent a few hours together they had struck up a friendship and had even made plans to go for a coffee once he recovered.

Lucy added: "While I was in the hospital with him I was holding his hand and he kept pulling me closer and squeezing my hand.

"He told me 'I am so lucky that I crashed into a person like you'.

"He was just an absolutely amazing person and I am so happy that I was a part of his life."

Lucy is now self-isolating until she hears from the hospital if the man tested positive for the coronavirus.

She is staying apart from her mum, who is also a nurse, and her brother but says her family have been able to drop off some food and other essentials.

Speaking about the response she had after going viral, Lucy said: "Reading all the messages of support has been really overwhelming - I am just a normal girl I'm not used to my phone ringing like this."
