Jeremy Corbyn Says We Will Get St George's Day Off If He Is Voted In

Jeremy Corbyn Says We Will Get St George's Day Off If He Is Voted In

St Andrew's Day, St David's Day, and St Patrick's Day too

As every proud English patriot knows, today is St George's Day. April 23 represents a day to celebrate everything English.

But - and here's the important question - why don't English folk get a day off to celebrate their national day?

Americans have their 4 July, Australia has Australia Day, France has Bastille Day - surely the English are getting shafted here?

And whilst we're at it, what about St David's Day, St Andrew's Day, and St Patrick's Day? Surely the people of Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales would also like a day off to celebrate those important days too?

Well, Jeremy Corbyn has given a speech today at a union conference in which he re-stated his desire to make all four of those days public holidays.

That would give people in the UK an extra four days off every year. Whatever your political views are, that's got to make sense.

It's not as if we haven't got some ground to make up, too. The UK currently has the fewest public holidays of any EU and G20 country. Time to even that up.

Speaking at the annual Communication Workers Union conference, Mr Corbyn said: "If we win the next election, St George's Day will become a national holiday for Britain's workers.

"It will be a day where we can all show our pride and celebrate our country's tradition of fairness, inclusivity and social justice.

"Eight years of Tory austerity, which Labour will bring to an end, have had a disastrous effect on our vital public services and workers have paid a heavy price in the cost of living and their working lives. We will give our workers four extra days paid holiday.

"The four nations that make up our country are more divided as a result of the damaging and divisive policies of this Conservative government."

Put aside the swipes at the Conservative Party - it's not just Labour that support extra bank holidays - some Conservatives and members of other parties are on board too.

With any luck, all of the major parties will take Corbyn's lead and make a similar promise. I mean, it's got to be a vote winner, right?

Now, obviously you shouldn't throw away your vote on something as frivolous as whether you get more time off work, but many studies have shown that people are happier when they have more free time to do things that they find meaningful.

There is also research that suggests that people who work less hours actually have a greater output - so let's make it happen.
