A beaming Prince Harry has said he is 'over the moon' following the birth of his and Meghan's first child, who arrived at 5.26am today (Monday 6 May), weighing 7lbs 3oz.

In a statement to the press, he said: "I'm very excited to announced that Meghan and myself had a baby boy earlier this morning - a very healthy boy.

"Mother and baby are doing incredibly well. It's been the most amazing experience I could ever have possibly imagined.

"How any woman does what they do is beyond comprehension.

"We're both absolutely thrilled and so grateful to all the love and support from everybody out there."

Harry explained he and Meghan were 'still thinking about names', adding: "The baby's a little bit overdue, so we've had a little bit of time to think about it, but that's the next bit.

"We will be seeing you guys in two days' time as planned, as a family, to share it with you guys so everyone can see the baby."

Harry and Meghan were married last May.

When asked what it felt like to be present for the birth, Harry laughed and said: "I haven't been at many births. This is definitely my first birth.

"It was amazing, absolutely incredible, and, as I said, I'm so incredibly proud of my wife.

"As every father and parent will ever say, you know, your baby is absolutely amazing, but this little thing is absolutely to-die-for, so I'm just over the moon."

Their son's birth was announced via the @sussexroyal Instagram page, with a statement that read: "We are pleased to announce that Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed their firstborn child in the early morning on May 6th, 2019. Their Royal Highnesses' son weighs 7lbs. 3oz.

"The Duchess and baby are both healthy and well, and the couple thank members of the public for their shared excitement and support during this very special time in their lives.

"More details will be shared in the forthcoming days."

The news was announced via the @sussexroyal Instagram profile.

Buckingham Palace confirmed Harry was present for the birth, adding: "The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Lady Jane Fellowes, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Earl Spencer have been informed and are delighted with the news.

"The duchess's mother, Doria Ragland, who is overjoyed by the arrival of her first grandchild, is with their Royal Highnesses at Frogmore Cottage."

The new arrival is the Queen's eighth great-grandchild.

According to the BBC, the baby is seventh in line to the throne, behind the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cambridge and his children - Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis - and the Duke of Sussex.
