Rare Blue Moon Will Be Visible On Halloween Tomorrow

Spooky season indeed

Tomorrow is not just Halloween, it also marks the first time a blue moon has fallen on 31 October since 2001.

A blue moon means there are two full moons in the same calendar month.

Unlike a blood moon or a super moon, in which the moon looks different physically, it just means that we get to see it twice in October.

The first could be seen on the first of the month, and the second will fall tomorrow - the last day of the month.

That means that this year, there'll be 13 full moons rather than the usual 12 - with the extra one falling on Halloween. How very 2020.

Don't worry though, it's not yet another symbol of the End Of Days or a weird supernatural occurrence, it just means that the planet and the moon have aligned up just right on the spookiest of days.

And of course, what's a blue moon on Halloween if you don't get yourself a snap for the 'gram.

Speaking to Irish Times about recording it, if your eyes aren't enough, Astronomy Ireland's David Moore said: "Even camera phones can take great photos of the moon these days, either close up, or against a backdrop of buildings, statues or landscapes."

You'll also be able to see Uranus if you play your cards right [insert your own disgusting joke here].

Moore added: "Uranus is 3.8 degrees above the moon that evening but at magnitude +5.7 and with a full moon so close you probably won't even be able to see it with binoculars, and certainly not the naked eye - but still, it is nice to know Uranus is there to celebrate such a triple whammy!"

Triple whammy indeed.

Seeing as the year's left a fair amount to be desired, it looks like people have decided to go all out with their decorations, including one guy whose murder scene was so realistic the police had to come and check he hadn't killed anyone.

Steven Novak decided to go the extra mile this spooky season and used about two gallons of fake blood to create the grisly murder scenes that adorn his fairly normal house.

The display features a body bag, as well as a man killed with a chainsaw, and a handful of other macabre lawn dressings.

Impressive, to say the very least.
