While most of us have experienced very minor road rage before - breathing a loud sigh as someone turns without indicating or, at worst, doing a little swear when someone undertakes you - most of us can normally keep it PG.

But sometimes it's not quite so simple - as proven by recent dashcam footage released by vehicle CCTV firm SmartWitness, which shows a man lifting his bike up and smashing it into the bonnet of a Mercedes V-Class MPV.

The chauffeur then runs back to his car to alert police saying 'That's criminal damage'.

The limousine is worth up to £56,000, and the cyclist caused £1,500 worth of damage after scraping the pedals of the bike across the bonnet.

The incident took place during rush hour traffic on 27 September in Marshalsea Road near Borough rube station in London.

The chauffeur reported it to the Metropolitan Police, who have not yet made any arrests but are investigating what happened.

The chauffeur, who didn't want to be named, said: "It is crazy that cyclists can vandalise a vehicle in this way and then cycle away scot-free.

"He needs to be named and shamed to send a clear message to cyclists that this behaviour is completely unacceptable.

"Cycle rage is an epidemic in London at the moment - I am subject to threats virtually every day.

"All taxis and limousines needs to fitted with vehicle cameras to protect them from this menace."

He hopes that going public with the footage will identify the culprit so he can be prosecuted.

Paul Singh from SmartWitness - which specialises in evidence cameras for taxi drivers and chauffeurs - said: "We are seeing a huge increase in road rage incidents involving cyclists.

"Taxi drivers and chauffeurs know they have to protect themselves with video footage to prove they are not at fault and to provide evidence of criminal damage which is highlighted in this case.

"Due to the high resolution video footage the chauffeur has been able to prove he was not at fault to his insurer and claim back the cost of the repairs.

"It is to be hoped that publicity surrounding this case will identify the cyclist so that he can be prosecuted. He is clearly a danger to other road users."

The Department for Transport is currently looking into whether or not road safety laws need updating to include new penalties for dangerous cyclists.

Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne has said that cyclists should have the same identification as drivers, so that they can be prosecuted for offences such as jumping red lights.
