Serial killer Rose West, who was convicted in 1995 for committing 10 murders, some with her husband, Fred, is reportedly seriously ill in prison.

West was sentenced to life imprisonment after she and Fred were found to have murdered at least nine young women between 1971 and 1987.

After 22 years at HMP Low Newton, in Durham, Rose is reported to be sick with a mysterious illness and has to be escorted to medical facilities.

When moved around the prison it goes into lock down, as there's a high chance she may be attacked by other inmates.

"She is very ill. Her medical records are closely guarded, and she has a very small circle of staff and fellow inmates in jail, so hardly anyone knows exactly what's wrong with her," an 'insider' told the Daily Star.

"But the rumour is that it's very serious, and could even finish her off.

"West's life is planned to the letter, because her notoriety makes her very vulnerable to attacks from fellow inmates.

"It also means that when she requires medical attention or prescribed drugs, the entire wing is locked down so she is not attacked while visiting the doctor or pharmacist."

Fred and Rose west first met in 1969, two years after the former committed his first killing, the murder of Anne McFall, who he'd gotten pregnant with an illegitimate child.

Not long after, in 1971, while Fred was incarcerated for theft, Rose committed her first murder. She killed her husband's step-daughter (from a previous marriage) Charmaine, who's remains were kept in the cellar of their home until he was released from prison.

Upon his return he removed his daughter's body from the cellar and buried her near the back door of their flat, with her body slightly dismembered. Fred's victims usually had their limbs severed before being buried somewhere.

In 1992 the pair's house was searched after one of their daughter's friend's mother anonymously told police that the Wests would often rape and abuse their children.

Though they found no evidence of this and eventually all charges were dropped, they remained on the case, finding Charmaine West, Heather West and Rena West, Fred's former wife.

They had all been murdered, but Fred and Rose claim to not know of their whereabouts, claiming that they'd simply walked out on them to start new lives.

After Anna Marie West informed DC Savage that her father had, on a few occasions, made what was believed to be a joke about Heather West being 'underneath the patio'.

Police gained a search warrant and in the early hours of one morning in 1994 they began to dig up his garden. After telling his son, Stephen, to look after his mum, Fred confessed to the murder of Heather.

In questioning he admitted that there were a further two bodies buried in his garden. Eventually, when police began to search the entire house, West gave his solicitor a note to pass on to Superintendent John Bennett of the Gloucestershire Police, which said he wanted to confess to more murders.
