Former England footballer Jamie Carragher will not appear on tonight's Monday Night Football show after being suspended by Sky Sports due to his involvement in a spitting scandal, Sky News has revealed.

In a tweet, the Sky News team confirmed that Carragher's non-appearance is directly linked to his being filmed spitting at a family from his car after Liverpool's 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Sky News later added that Carragher has been suspended from his role as a football analyst at Sky, with Sky bosses saying his conduct 'fell well below the standards we expect of our people'.

The spitting incident was filmed by a Manchester United supporter from his car as he drove alongside Carragher on the way home from Saturday's game, gently poking fun at the former Liverpool defender in the wake of the result.

As the dad beeped his horn at Jamie, shouting, "Hey Jamie, good result, 2-1," Carragher was spotted spitting towards the man from the window of his car, his saliva hitting the man's 14-year-old daughter in the passenger seat instead.

The girl's dad told the Mirror: "I was stunned. I had not insulted him. I had not sworn at him. I have not got out and banged on his car. I have not done anything abusive to him, I've not stuck two fingers up at him.

"I've met footballers before and they have always been very accommodating. I thought, 'Jamie Carragher, he is going to be up for a laugh.' So when he did spit I was taken aback.

"I looked at my daughter and she was tearing up. I said did he hit you and she said, 'He hit me in the face.'

"For a grown man to do that to a girl who had not done anything. She was sat in a passenger seat while her dad was trying to have a bit of harmless banter."

After the Mirror broke the story Carragher owned up to his role in the incident over Twitter, admitting that his behaviour was 'totally out of order'.

Carragher also confirmed that he rang the girl and her dad to apologise for the incident, which both her mum and dad have thanked him for.
