Football fans at the Liverpool Roma match are being urged to take part in a touching tribute to Alfie Evans in the 23 minute.

Using the hashtag #chantforalfie, supporters have called for a round of applause and a song as a tribute to the little boy during the Champion's League fixture this evening.

Twenty-three-month-old Alfie, from Liverpool, has an undiagnosed brain condition. Following a lengthy legal battle between his parents Tom Evans, 21, and Kate James, 20, and Alder Hey Hospital, his life-support was withdrawn last night. However, the little boy surprised everyone as he continued to breath, and was given oxygen by medics.

Speaking this morning, his dad said: "Nine hours he has been breathing now. It's actually come to the point where his mum is asleep next to him. She can actually go to sleep next to him. She feels comfortable with him."

His case was taken back to the High Court today.

The family want to fly Alfie to Bambino Gesú, a hospital in Rome, where experts have reportedly said they will treat the little boy. However, the hospital says it is in the child's best interests to withdraw life support as his brain condition, which has never been diagnosed, cannot be treated.

Both hospitals have given the same prognosis for Alfie, the Liverpool Echo reports.

Following the latest High Court hearing, a football fan took to Twitter to request a tribute to the little boy - in a post, which has since been copied and shared across the social media site.

It said: "LFC are at Anfield - can anyone get in touch with all the fans about a chant on 23 mins for Alfie? The world will be able to watch the game and try to get a picture of Alfie on the big screen. Has anyone got contacts at Anfield to be able to sort something? #AlfiesArmy #ChantForAlfie."

In a statement ahead of the match, the Roman Diocesan Office for Leisure Time, Tourism and Sport Francesco Indelicato said: "They will express their support for this family and will be close them in defence of the life and dignity of every human being."
