Stanley Johnson has been spotted shopping without a face mask on.

The Prime Minister's dad was seen popping into a newsagent in London without a face covering yesterday - despite those who refuse to wear a mask, without a valid reason, now facing fines of £200 ($257).

When approached by the Mirror, the 80-year-old said he wasn't 'up to speed' with the new rules but admitted that was 'no excuse'.

He said: "I was maybe not 100 percent up to speed but that was my first day back in England after three weeks not in England.

"So they [the rules] may have changed in that time. I'm not really a big shopping man.

"I'm extremely sorry for the slip up and I would urge absolutely everybody to do everything they can to make sure they do follow the rules about masks and social distancing.

"The fact this was my first day back in the UK after three weeks abroad is, I am sure, no excuse for not knowing the rules."

Wearing a mask or face covering is compulsory while in shops in England, unless you have a valid exemption.

The move to make masks mandatory came in in July, with Health Secretary Matt Hancock saying at the time: "As we move into the next stage of easing restrictions for the public, it is vital we continue to shop safely so that we can make the most of our fantastic retail industry this summer.

"Everyone must play their part in fighting this virus by following this new guidance. I also want to thank the British public for all the sacrifices they are making to help keep this country safe."

Fines were initially set at £100 for first-time offenders, but were upped to £200 last month.

Speaking yesterday, Boris Johnson warned those choosing not to wear masks: "Bear in mind that the fines are now very considerable and they will be imposed."

He added: "Please follow the guidance and bear in mind that you're doing it not just to protect your neighbour but ultimately somebody that you transmit the disease to could end up infecting someone that you love.

"It's absolutely crucial that we stop the spread of this disease."
