Stick the Kettle On - There's Another Storm Hitting The UK Today

In case you haven't managed to get out of your toasty bed today, it's a bit nippy in the UK at the moment. That's all down to Storm Fionn, the sixth storm to strike the UK this winter.

Parts of the UK have already been left buried under snow overnight after a -7C wind blast, but Britain's set to get hit even harder tonight once the storm makes its way through Ireland today.

While the Met Office has confirmed that the storm isn't expected to hit severe warning levels, it is still expected to bring with it 80mph winds and flash floods, so stay safe out there.

The entire country has been placed under a yellow weather warning until Thursday afternoon, just weeks after Storm Eleanor brought heavy winds and swells off the coast.

Northern Ireland and central Scotland are subject to a more serious Amber warning with severe snowfall expected from this afternoon into tomorrow morning.

While Tulloch Bridge in Scotland was hit hardest last night, seeing 8cm of snowfall overnight, southern Scotland, northern England and Northern Ireland have all seen snow - and there's more expected by the end of the day.

Luke Miall, a forecaster at the Met Office, said: "The forecast for today is it's likely to become a bit more wintry so we could be seeing snow for many areas, with northern and western areas seeing frequent showers."

Snow and ice will become more likely further south in parts of Wales and the Midlands by the end of the day, the national weather service added.

Meanwhile, showers are expected to carry on into Tuesday night with the north of the UK expected to suffer more wintry showers on Wednesday.

Of course, it wouldn't be the UK without travel disruption at times like these, and the Met Office has warned us to expect problems with road, rail and ferry services.

Forecasters added that some areas may be hit by power cuts and loss of mobile coverage, and there may even be a 'danger to life' due to a risk of flying debris. Wonderful.

It won't be over on Wednesday though, as a separate weather system crossing the Atlantic will bring strong winds to the UK from Wednesday night until Thursday afternoon.

"A deepening area of low pressure is likely to sweep across the Atlantic to affect the UK on Wednesday night into Thursday," the Met Office said.

"Warnings are in force to cover the predicted very strong winds across many areas, and some significant snow is possible across parts of Scotland."

Winds will potentially reach speeds of between 60-70 mph and may even hit 80 mph in some places. The Met Office has also said to expect heavy rainfall and potential flooding on low-lying roads, with river levels in the West Country already rising due to torrential rain.

So basically, for the next few days, stay inside if you can, get a board game out and keep your sandbags at the ready. You've got a storm to ride out.
