A new Channel 4 show has captured the moment that a taxi driver who raped a 20-year-old woman and a 15-year-old girl was told that the police had irrefutable DNA evidence linking him to the crimes.

The driver had evaded capture for a decade until he was swabbed for a completely unrelated crime and the match became clear.

Thirty-six-year-old Shipu Ahmed was told that police could prove that he was responsible for the two rapes that took place in 2007. However, he was only arrested and charged with the crimes ten years later.

The police interview in which Ahmed was told about all of this was broadcast on Channel 4's 24 Hours in Police Custody last night.

Basically, at the time that the crimes were committed, Bedfordshire Police asked all taxi drivers in the area to provide a swab to prove that they weren't responsible for the attacks.

However, Ahmed did not show up to provide his DNA, and police failed to chase him down to provide the sample that would have identified him 10 years ago.

After the two horrific attacks, semen swabs had been taken from both of the victims. This allowed the police to obtain a DNA profile of the rapist. It was only when Ahmed was brought in for a separate domestic incident that they finally found out that he was a match.

Ahmed was arrested and charged, before standing trial and being sentenced to 22 years in prison back in 2018.

In the clip, Ahmed looks on aghast as Detective Ginnette Amico explains to him that he is a complete DNA match for the two crimes.

The police officer said: "You are forensically linked to this incident that has happened on the 30th of November. Forensics do not lie. There is no grey area in this."

Her colleague, Detective Constable Jon Wheeler, then added: "The DNA is from your semen."

During Ahmed's trial, the court was told that he took the 15-year-old girl to a quiet area called Totternhoe Knoll in Bedfordshire before dragging her out of the cab and raping her. He then raped the second woman two weeks later in the back of his cab after picking her up from a nightclub in Dunstable.

Even though the domestic incident that led to him providing a DNA sample did not lead anywhere, the police's forensic database showed that his DNA linked him indelibly to the previous crimes.

Ahmed claimed that the girl told him she was older, and the 20-year-old woman had offered sex as a means of paying her fare.

He also claimed that he was targeted because he was an Asian taxi driver.
