We've all had problems on trains before - ridiculous delays, even more ridiculous cancellations, grim bogs, screaming kids, drunk people... and that's just your average Monday morning commute.

I mean, these people don't even seem to have managed to get proper seats, the poor bastards:

But something happened to one train that none of us really thought was possible: it got lost.

A passenger on the train, Jeni Harvey, tweeted to say that she was 'currently on a lost train somewhere near Pontefract'.

She added that everyone had been told they were stuck because the driver 'went the wrong way'.

Tweeting a photo of what looked like a power station, Jeni added: "I'm seeing a LOT of Ferrybridge power station today. Or is it Drax? Dunno."

In a later tweet Jeni explained that the service was a CrossCountry train bound for Reading. However, it ended up terminating in Sheffield instead. She explained that she got on the train in York at 3.35pm.

One Twitter user wrote: "I really did not know that trains could get lost!"

Jeni replied: "No! You wouldn't, would you?! But as hundreds of us unfortunately found yesterday, indeed they can...!"

Someone else commented that it sounded like an episode of Thomas The Tank Engine, which is a fair shout, actually.

They added: "Where's the Fat Controller when you need him?"

Other people speculated that it could have been anissue with the signal, but a statement from CrossCountry said that the incident was still 'being investigated'.

A spokesperson for CrossCountry said: "Unfortunately while being diverted because of an earlier event our 14:35 service from Newcastle to Reading was involved in an operational incident near Pontefract that meant it was unable to continue.

"After a delay the train was able to travel to Sheffield were it was terminated and customers were able to continue their journeys on alternative services.

"The cause of this incident is currently being investigated."

I mean, apart from anything else, at least it makes those screaming kids fighting over an iPad seem like a distant memory, right?
