Two police officers were injured as they broke up a party in Chelsea which involved around 200 people.

The event, which was branded 'incredibly selfish', took place in one of the most expensive neighbourhoods in London after the force received reports of a mass gathering at around 3.30am on 17 January.

But when they attended to break up the party, at Beauchamp Place, some of those attending became hostile and pushed through, causing two police officers to sustain injuries.

However, nobody was arrested over the incident, with police confirming that the owner has already previously been given a £1,000 fine.

Supt Michael Walsh said: "Attending or organising such parties during this critical period is an incredibly selfish decision to make.

"While the majority of breaches have been resolved without incident, it deeply saddens me that some individuals have chosen to assault police who are simply doing their part in the collective battle against this deadly virus."

Fines of £800 will be introduced in England from next week, for anyone attending a house party of more than 15 people. They will double for each repeat offence to a maximum of £6,400.

Last week, police were called to a wake in North London where more than 100 people had gathered.

Speaking at a news conference this week, Patel said there is still a 'small minority that refuse to do the right thing'.

She said: "To them my message is clear. If you don't follow rules then the police will enforce them."

It comes after a shocking New Year's Eve protest took place in the capital outside one of the city's main hospitals.

A crowd gathered outside St Thomas' hospital, confronting medics who had been working through the holidays to treat patients.

Dr Matthew Lee was confronted by the large group of Covid deniers as he headed home after finishing a late shift in A&E at the hospital.

Shocked by what he saw, the young medic posted a video of the scene to his Twitter account and called on people to see sense.

He said: "Worked the late A&E shift on New Year's Eve and came out to this.

"Hundreds of maskless, drunk people in huge groups shouting 'Covid is a hoax', literally outside the building where hundreds are sick and dying.

"Why do people still not realise the seriousness of this pandemic?"

Dr Lee then went on to say that while he was 'disgusted' by what he saw, he was 'mostly heartbroken'.

He said: "I wish people could see the amount of Covid-19 and death in hospitals, and the sacrifices that healthcare workers make.

"This week alone has been so tough. Their ignorance is hurting others.

"I really wish people would keep themselves safe."
