A 35-year-old woman who spent 141 days in hospital fighting off coronavirus has finally been allowed to return back to her home.

Fatima Bridle spent almost the entirety of the UK's period of lockdown in Southampton General Hospital battling Covid-19, as well as sepsis and pneumonia.

Her lungs collapsed, leading to her requiring a ventilator, and she spent 40 days of her hospital stay in a coma.

Now, after enduring 'horrific' pain, she has beaten it all and returned to her home and family.

Fatima first got ill upon returning from Morocco, and her husband Tracy had also got ill, meaning that he didn't see his wife for five months.

She told The Sun on Sunday: "I can't believe I've woken up from all of this. I feel I've been gifted a new life.

"I wished I was dead at one point. It was so scary and terrifying. I wanted to scream out but I couldn't.

"It was horrific. I didn't have Tracy because he could not visit."

The former lab technician now wants to give back to those who helped her get through this time of need by working for the NHS.

She spoke of how grateful she is to the workers who cared for her at her darkest time.

Fatima said: "The NHS saved my life. Everyone was incredible. All deserve a medal."

Remarkably, she came through the ordeal and, after spending 105 days on the ventilator, is allowed to go home.

Last month, her husband told of how his wife was 'invincible' and said her recovery was a 'miracle'.

Ex-soldier Tracy said: "By the start of the second week I was told she was critical - a nurse said, 'She's fighting for life',

"They were putting them on ventilators and turning them round like rotisserie chickens to try to make them respond to treatment.

"I had watched loads of reports about Covid by this stage and her situation was killing me.

"She's my medical miracle. To be on a ventilator that long and survive is extraordinary. I can't wait to see her again."

Tracy said his wife's recovery is a 'miracle'.

The Health Secretary Matt Hancock said that he was pleased that Fatima had awoken from her coma and was recovering well.

Hancock said: "I'm absolutely thrilled by this news.

"It proves that no matter who you are, the NHS is there for you and your family."

Fatima will now continue her recovery at home alongside her husband.
