Undercover Cops On Scrambler Bikes Swarm On Moped Gang In Dramatic Dashcam Footage

Moped crime is on the rise in a massive way.

Footage has emerged that shows a dramatic arrest by undercover police officers on mopeds in Manchester.

Dashcam footage recorded by a nearby car shows two mopeds - one carrying a passenger on the back - sitting at lights in Moston, Manchester, as police descended upon them and surrounded them.

One of the police bikes knocked down one of the two and the person sitting on it then tried to make off on foot.

The same police bike then stopped in front of the two.

The other undercover copper then arrived around the back of the group and successfully collared one of the two moped riders, grabbing them by the scruff of the neck.

It was at that point that a marked police bike with its siren blaring and lights flashing arrived on the scene.

The scenes were recorded at about 4pm on 12 May, earlier this year, in the North Manchester area. It's not yet been confirmed what the police were trying to apprehend the two moped riders for, but there has been a reported rise in crime involving mopeds and scrambler bikes in recent times.

In fact, incidents involving mopeds, scooters, and scrambler bikes rose by 50 percent in London up until May this year.

London is the centre of this sort of crime, with attacks from people on scooters up 1,000 percent in the past three years. That's 16,000 attacks in 2017, as opposed to just 1,053 in 2014.

On top of that, figures released last month show that London's police forces dealt with 430 moped related crimes per week in the past year.

Most of the crimes relate to theft, but some have been more serious than that, including stabbings. Moped thieves have been reported as saying that they feel as if police 'can't catch' them.

One told the Sun: "You can never catch me on the bike, they can never catch me in action - no way.

"You can't stop someone on a moped, police can't stop us on a moped anyway. It's against the law, they have to leave us to drive off because if you do something you're going to lose your job.

"Because you're on a moped, it's not going to work, you'll kill us so you're just gonna have to leave us to drive - try and get the helicopter out or something."

Meanwhile, back in Greater Manchester, a special police team has been set up to deal with exactly this sort of thing.

The Safer Roads Targeting Team (SRTT) features a team of seven off-road bikes and several road bikes, as well as unmarked cars that they use to find, target, and catch people committing crimes on scooters and mopeds.
