A Manchester United fan is celebrating winning more than £91,000 ($115,000) after placing £55,000 ($69,000) on Liverpool to win the Premier League all the way back in October.

Tony Ward, 53, confidently stumped up the £55,000 despite the reds not winning the league for 30 years and his faith in the club paid off as Liverpool claimed the title on 25 June earning him an incredible payout of £91,666.66.

Tony used part of the inheritance left after him mum Rose died in 2017 to make the 4/6 bet.

Now the dad-of-three says he's plans to spend his winnings on a big holiday. It's going to be some holiday that, pal.

Tony, from Bradford, West Yorkshire, stuck the bet at a local branch of Ladbrokes on 9 October.

Talking about his win, he said: "I fancy a big holiday at some point. The rest is for a rainy day.

"Liverpool were always looking like they could win the title. I picked them after a long, long debate.

"It was a two-horse race between them and Manchester City, as far as I was concerned.

"I'm an armchair supporter, really - I've actually been fan of Manchester United since I was a kid!

"[Mum] wouldn't have minded what I did with the money - not at all. She liked a flutter! She liked the horses.

"But I'd give it all back to still have her around. I cherished her."

Tony was left feeling frustrated when the coronavirus pandemic halted the league for several weeks - having a bit more at stake than your average footy fan. At one point he was even concerned the season would have been cancelled, making his bet void.

He said: "I would have got my stake back, I think, if the season had been cancelled. But that would have been unfair.

"Liverpool were that far clear. They only needed six points.

"They had to play Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur in the two games after [the bet was placed].

"I thought that if they could get through them I was going to win."

Despite his most recent bet paying off, Tony says he's going to stay away from betting shops for a while.

"I certainly haven't got any plans to put another bet on for that money again," he said. "I won't dive in.

"I don't bet just £5 or £10. I won't just do it willy-nilly!

"I've always liked a flutter - especially when I was younger - but I've tried to be good over the last few years.

"I only bet when I really feel it. I pretty much knew when I stuck the bet on that Liverpool were going to do it."

A spokesperson for Ladbrokes said: "Liverpool won the Premier League with ease in the end and delivered the goods for our confident customer."
