A wallaby has been spotted bouncing down a street in Cornwall.

Jack Carthey, 22, managed to whip out his phone and film the animal as it made its way along a road near St Austell on Sunday evening (27 September).

In the clip, the marsupial can be seen hopping along towards some train tracks.

Jack had been driving home from his shift at McDonald's with his girlfriend Megan Thomas when they saw the animal, which they originally mistook for a dog stood on its hind legs.

Speaking to Cornwall Live, Jack said: "I think if we didn't have the video nobody would have believed us. I mean even showing people the video they still don't quite believe it.

"When I first saw it I thought it was a dog standing. It was the second time we got up to it as well when we took the video, the first time we saw it we got out the car and tried to get close to it but we really didn't know what to do.

"We called the police and even they said it was one of the most unusual calls to receive."

Another resident also spotted the wallaby later on that evening - however, according to Cornwall Live it's yet to be captured so is presumably still out and about in the city.

The owners of the wallaby have been found and are currently trying to catch it.

Bizarrely, this isn't the first time a wallaby has been spotted on the loose in Cornwall.

In 2017, one went on the run for several months, with various sightings over the summer in Launceston, Lerryn and Lostwithiel.

The cheeky wallaby managed to evade capture from an RSPCA collection officer, who said at the time: "He'd made his way into a garden but as we tried to carefully corral him with pallets and plywood he'd already come up with an escape plan and dashed through a small gap.

"He appears to be well and uninjured but no one has been able to get close enough to be sure so we'd encourage anyone who spots him to contact us."
