So, wearing glasses can be a bit of a drag. Everyone thinks it is quite alright to just grab them off your face, stick them on and then say "Wow! You really are blind, aren't you?" You wouldn't do that with someone's false teeth though, would you?

Then there are the dangers of doing anything sporty. Most glasses wearers probably have a pair of glasses that they wouldn't mind getting smashed off their face by a football.

But, it's not all bad, my bespectacled friends. I have good news. Everyone thinks that people who wear glasses look smarter than people without, and now there is research to back that up.

There is always an exception to the rule.

Admittedly that research was done by a chain of opticians, who probably have a couple of interests to declare with regards to the fact that they actually sell glasses for a living, but still - it's something.

Yes, the research commissioned by Scrivens Opticians and Hearing Care found that people who wear glasses think they are perceived differently when they are wearing their specs instead of when they aren't.

A spokesperson for the company, Adrian Ellis, said: "The results go to show just how the simple addition of glasses can alter people's perception of someone else. It's a long-held belief glasses make you appear more intelligent but it's really interesting to see if people think this is actually true.

"Perhaps this perception stems from how intelligence has traditionally been symbolised on TV, film, theatre and so on."

Seventy percent of Brits wear glasses because they have to and even those who don't seem to want to. One in ten people has worn a pair of glasses as a fashion accessory.

Thirteen percent of people have also admitted that they are jealous of those who have to wear glasses whilst 63 percent of specs wearers think that they look better when they have their glasses on as opposed to when they don't.

The research was done by OnePoll.com and it's not all good news. For example, about 20 percent of people think people who wear glasses look like nerds; although a similar amount think they reckon you look stylish in your glasses, so don't worry.

Here comes the hard sell though - Adrian Ellis continued: "People who need prescription eyewear should not hesitate to take that step because it will improve their sight and give them a whole new outlook.

"They should not be concerned about how others view them because they will see the benefits. Today's glasses are more practical, stylish and with a wide choice of frames to suit people's needs lifestyles and personalities.

"We would advise people to have regular eye tests to check if they need glasses and to monitor their eye health."
