Woman Crashes Into Flower Show With Driving Instructions Taped To Dashboard

She definitely shouldn't be on the road... and, for a while there, she wasn't.

A woman who drove her car straight through a village flower show on Saturday morning was found to have had instructions on how to drive taped to her dashboard.

The woman swerved her blue Toyota RAV4 straight through a packed out marquee at the Burnham Market flower show in Norfolk, causing everyone inside to flee for their lives.

She eventually crashed into the stage of the main marquee - but, incredibly, nobody was seriously hurt throughout the whole incident.

Once the dust had settled, the organisers of the event went to check that the elderly lady, who will remain anonymous, was alright.

They were shocked to discover that inside the automatic SUV vehicle was a handwritten note stuck to the car's dashboard that read: "Key in ignition. Foot on brake. Start engine. Gear Lever into D. Foot off brake."

Naturally, they were a bit annoyed, not least because they had just nearly died, but also because in one terrifying moment a lot of hard work and effort that had gone into organising the flower show was ruined.

Dr Diana Black, the Secretary of Burnham's Flower Show and Carnival, said: "It was like a terrorist incident. It was absolutely terrible.

"It was an accident, but when I saw that note I was in disbelief and started to feel angry - if you need written instructions, surely you shouldn't be driving.

"We were astonished and hugely relieved that there were no fatalities or serious injuries but it was very distressing that all time and effort of the contestants who had entered the competitions in the marquee was virtually ruined.

She continued: "There could've been fatalities or serious injuries but miraculously there wasn't.

"We were also sorry that the locals and visitors were deprived of the main part of what is normally a wonderful and important community event."

Dr Black added that once the woman got out of the car she was shaken, but not seriously harmed. She also said that the woman was incredibly apologetic.

Annette Lowe, who witnessed the whole scene unfold, said: "We heard an almighty bang, I turned around and saw this car going through the stage, I just looked on in utter bewilderment.

"Although the car was going fast, everything else felt like it was moving in slow motion."

The incident happened at about 11:30am on Saturday while there were around 12 people inside the tent. There were also around 30 people there to set the event up.

Treasurer Laurence Rubin was hit by the car, but thankfully was not seriously hurt.

Inspector Lou Provart, from Norfolk Police, said: "A traffic offence report has been completed and will be submitted for consideration of any offences based on the facts gathered at scene, including the note."
