Woman Slams Claims Her Hotel Is A 'Brothel' After Sign Sparks Backlash

Woman Slams Claims Her Hotel Is A 'Brothel' After Sign Sparks Backlash

A woman has hit back at claims her hotel is a brothel after its 'sultry' new sign caused a stir.

Lyn Dew says a re-branding of her hotel, the Sydney House in Plymouth, Devon, prompted a visit from police.

The sign features the silhouette of a woman's body set against a bright pink background.

And it caused some residents to be so disgusted that one family even branded it 'a brothel'.

However, Lyn says it's absolute rubbish and explained that the woman on the sign was supposed to represent her.

Speaking about the outrage, she said: "I've had this place for a few years actually, I bought it on a whim because my husband had died.

"Coming to Plymouth, I soon realised that areas, especially Stonehouse, needed a bump up.

"I looked at the Hoe [an area in the city] but this had 11 rooms and 22 capacity. The lady was looking to retire, so I took it on."

Lyn has been running Sydney House for a few years now and said she felt it was time to freshen things up.

"I thought, 'I'll put a silhouette of me [on the sign],'" she said. "My parents always dressed me in pink, my favourite colour, so I put my childhood in the back, and I'll put 'LGBTQ+ friendly'. That's all.

"I just wanted psychologically to see how people perceived a woman's body - and black at that. It's all double negatives," she added.

But she admitted that while most people have been complimentary, not everyone is quite as in love with the new look as she is.

She added: "Most people have been very, very good to me. Rung me up and said I've upgraded the area.

"[The sign] lights up in the evening, neon on a timer for catching the right light.

"Initially the first few days you had some drugged up drunks saying, 'What do you do?' It's a hotel.

"'Is it a club?' For what? You see a woman's body as something of ill repute? They kept quiet."

Since it was installed, some people have taken to social media and branded it 'inappropriate'. But Lyn doesn't care.

"I put this sign outside my hotel because I wanted me to be represented as part of the people of colour community," she claimed.

"This has been a hotel since its inception. The image is me, it's my body. There is no bra on there, there's no bikini on there, just a stylish pose.

"That's me. I'm always a stylish woman and proud of it."

Rumours had even circulated that she was running a brothel from the hotel and local authorities visited Sydney House to check it out.

It's an allegation that she has strenuously denied.

Lyn said: "I always interview them on the phone. [I ask:] 'What purpose, where have you come from?'

"If they give me the right reasons then I get them in here to see them physically. If I don't like what I see, I tell them I won't be having them.

"I'm very selective."

And despite complaints, the defiant hotel owner says the sign will not be coming down any time soon.

She concluded: "I feel this has got to end. This is my creation and my ethos as a business woman - and a woman of colour, why shouldn't I be proud of my sign?"
