A dad over in the US has managed to piss off more than his daughter recently after sharing what some are calling an inappropriate pre-prom photo.

Former pro-footballer Jay Feely has Twitter divided over the image, which shows him holding a gun with his arm around his daughter. While she's staring lovingly at her dad, the young dude looks awkwardly nervous.

The caption reads: "Wishing my beautiful daughter and her date a great time at prom #BadBoys."

Obviously the pic encapsulates the classic overprotective dad trope, but some people are far from impressed at the image for its portrayal of gun ownership and for its message on female agency.

Despite the post only reaching the Twittersphere less than a day ago, already a number of responses show the debate is heating up. Some call him a 'badass dad', while others make statements like, "Cool to know if your daughter has any self agency you'll shoot her boyfriend."

America's gun control policies have been a topic of heated debate over the past few years in particular, ignited by numerous public and school shootings that have happened in recent times.

This seems to be the focus for many users who think the image is a symbol of the country's gun laws and its attitude towards firearms.

On the other side of the coin, tweeters argued back by describing how it is nothing more than a joke.

Adding to the layers of the debate were some users who claim the image brought up issues with regards to female agency and decision-making.

"Cool to know if your daughter has any self agency you'll shoot her boyfriend," wrote one user. Meanwhile, another simply posted: "Oh yay - American dads have kicked off the season of 'let's pretend I'm going to shoot my daughter's date for for impugning her chastity' pics."

All in all, looks like Feely has caused an absolute shitstorm with what he probably thought was just going to be a dad joke for his buddies and relatives to enjoy. Whoops - such is the nature of the Internet. You can't post much these days without sparking some sort of angry debate.
