IKEA Apologises After People Call Out Jerk Chicken With 'Rice And Peas'

If you're going to do something, do it properly - am I right?

The guys at IKEA definitely know what it feels like to be on the receiving end of some puzzled foodies this week, after their jerk chicken with 'rice and peas' was called into question.

Not a happy customer.

The popular Swedish furniture company is famous for its meatballs and IKEA Home card free brews, but now it's in the limelight again for less cheery reasons.

The classic Caribbean dish was added to their menu but it seems they didn't get the memo for the traditional dish of rice and peas - or more specifically, what it consists of. IKEA's version looks like a simple white rice with garden peas. Uh-oh.

But not to worry, the company has apologised and promised to take another look at the recipe.

That didn't stop people from expressing their horror though.

Another unhappy diner.

Someone commented: "IKEA - Great place for inexpensive furniture. Terrible place to buy 'Jamaican jerk chicken, and rice and peas' as they claimed this to be. It has now been removed from their menu lol."

Another fumed: "@IKEAUK hey guys I really wanna talk to you guys about your new ikea restaurant menu. The jerk chicken looks great but let me make you guys some rice & peas."

A third wrote: "Ikea seem to have a new dish of jerk chicken with rice and GREEN PEAS. More commonly referred to as Fückerjïē in store.

"Big Mama in soul food did not die for this. Uncle Ben and Aunt Jemima didn't suffer for this culinary appropriation. Why IKEA Why?"

Someone else couldn't believe their eyes.

According to the Metro, the initial recipe involved half a chicken covered with jerk seasoning but the 'rice and peas' were sadly a very literal interpretation.

'Rice and peas' is one name for a traditional food originating from from Ghana, also known as 'Moros de guandules con coco' (Moorish pigeon peas with coconut). The 'peas' are in fact beans, as beans are referred to as 'peas' in the Caribbean, and it usually involves Scotch bonnet pepper, thyme, scallions and/or round onions, ginger and coconut milk. Not quite what was on offer here.

Lorena Lourido, Country Food Manager, IKEA UK and Ireland told Metro: "We're aware that our new jerk chicken, served with rice and peas has created some conversation and in some cases offence.

"Our intention was to create a dish for many people to enjoy but we appreciate that we may have got it wrong. We apologise and we are now re-looking at the dish."
