Sixteen-Year-Old Explorer Has Brilliant Message For Online Trolls

The teenager has smashed world records but still has to put up with trolls online

A 16-year-old girl has become the youngest person to conquer the 'Polar Hat Trick' and left a fantastic message for trolls at the South Pole.

Despite only being 16, and still being in school, Jade Hameister, from Melbourne has managed to ski to the North Pole, skate across Greenland's largest icecap and skied down the South Pole. SIXTEEN. It's not the first time she's been skiiing around the area, either.

Anyway, when Jade took part in a TEDxMelbourne talk earlier this year, some properly unfunny guys dusted off their banter from 1997 and commented under the vid saying 'Make me a sandwich'. Retro.

Jade wasn't going to let a few idiots diminish her achievements, though, so when she got to the South Pole she made a sandwich and posted a photo of herself holding the butty with this caption: "Tonight (it never gets dark this time of year) I skied back to the Pole again...to take this photo for all those men who commented "Make me a sandwich" on my TEDX Talk. I made you a sandwich (ham & cheese), now ski 37 days and 600km to the South Pole and you can eat it xx"

Nicely done.

Speaking to CNN about the sandwich joke, she said: "The camp we were staying at was less than a (kilometre) away from the actual pole, so we were like, 'Let's just do it'.

"There's been a lot of comments on it, which I didn't really expect, but I guess it's just kind of funny."

The teenager spent 37 days travelling with her dad and guide Eric Philips and a two-person camera team from the National Geographic - who are filming her for a documentary which will be released later this year.

But Jade chose to reach the final destination all on her own, after pulling her 99kg sled for 373 miles - when I was 16 I couldn't even help my mum bring in the shopping from the car.

As well as doing the 'Polar Hat Trick', Jade is also the youngest woman to ski unassisted across the Greenland icecap and the first woman to travel through the Kansas Glacier off the coast of Antarctica.

She's now going to enjoy a few weeks off before heading to Melbourne to start year 11.
