A couple's 'wedding cake' has caused debate online for depicting a violent hunting scene.

The playful decoration shows a bring holding a rifle and dragging her camouflaged husband by the collar, surrounded by shotgun shells and a deer.

The side of the cake also reads: "The Hunt is Over."

But the joke didn't go down too well with people on Reddit after a snap of the cake was posted to the site's Wedding Shaming forum, with people branding it 'gross' and 'tacky'.

Commenting on the post, one user said: "Came to say this. Well made cake but omg so tacky."

A second wrote: "Did she... shoot him? That's not a good way to start a marriage"

"A trashy idea, but well executed. Can't say it's a graceful wedding cake though," put a third.

The cake caused a stir online.

A fourth later joked: "At least the groom isn't bloody?"

While another added: "This could be funny if Cupid had a compound bow and both bride and groom were struck by Arrows of Love or somesuch, but this 'bride murders groom' thing is over the top gross."

But while most people seemed not to understand the point, other users came out and explained exactly what the joke was.

They said: "The hunt means she was looking for a husband and finally found it.

"The bride 'bagged' herself a husband. That's why 'The hunt is over'. The Hunt for her husband is over.

"I guess you could look at it as 'the bride murdered the groom', but it's really missing the whole point of it. It's meant to be playful.

The design was for a 'groom's cake'.

"I still would never use it as a wedding cake myself, but maybe the groom/they are just really into hunting and who are we to judge that?"

Another put: "It's usually a joke about the woman isn't on the hunt for a man anymore. It's not murderous and the groom'll be out in a stand come deer season."

The controversial cake was designed by Graceful Cake Creations, who said that it was not a traditional wedding cake but, in fact, a groom's cake.

In an email, a spokesperson for the company told the Mail Online that the cake topper of the bride dragging the groom had been around for years and that it was pretty popular.

The email said: "I think the point is she got her man so the hunt for a husband is over."
