A trend has started online, with many choosing to be dressed to the nines at the end of the work week.

At many workplaces around the world, the end of the week signals a relaxing in office attire.

Loads of places will allow employees to come into work in casual clothes so that they're not constantly chucking on nice suits, shirts, tops, dresses or skirts.

But considering that millions of people around the world are now working from home amid the coronavirus pandemic, every day is Casual Fridays.

You might have to still don a nice top for that Zoom meeting, however you can get away with wearing your pyjamas for the rest of the day.

But a social media trend has seen people flip Casual Fridays on its head.

The hashtag #FormalFriday and #FormalFridays has taken off on Twitter and Instagram and it shows people being dressed to the nines on the final day of the working week.

It seems like the trend was started in New Zealand with TV personality Hilary Barry.

The Seven Sharp co-host uploaded a picture of her in a stunning dress and even capped it off with a goddamn tiara.

She's doubled down this week with her school ball gown from 1987.

Writing on Instagram, Ms Barry said: "Today I'm wearing it as a tribute to all the students who will miss their balls because of the lockdown. We feel for you. Remember your sacrifice right now is saving people's lives."

People have been jumping on the Formal Fridays bandwagon and it's epic.

The trend has even found its way to one American A-lister, with talk-show host Jimmy Kimmel asking everyone to get onboard with it.

He uploaded a video of his family all suited and booted for another Friday at home.

"Get out of that bath robe, put on your finest smoking jacket...for me it'll be the first time I've worn pants this week," he said to his followers.

While it might sound silly, it could have a real benefit for people who might not remember what day it is because they've been self-isolating in their home for so long to avoid Covid-19.

Queensland University of Technology (QUT) professor Daniel Angus told the ABC: "People are kind of inverting that [casual Friday] now because everyone's hanging around in track suit pants and t-shirts at home."

So, if you're sick of chucking on the same tracksuit pants or jumper that hasn't had a wash in two weeks then it might be time to dust off that dress you were saving for a fun night on the town or suit you used to wear every week at work.

It could be a welcome reprieve and also would be hilarious on your daily video work call.
