Asking a complete stranger out on a date is one of the toughest things to do, and thankfully, in the world of online dating, it's something we no longer necessarily have to go through IRL.

But a university student in Iowa, US, recently bucked the trend when she decided to go over to her would-be suitor and give him her number - which he accepted.

However, things didn't quite go as planned for Jill when she received a text from Derek telling her that he was actually gay. Unlucky.

It wasn't a total nightmare for the 18-year-old though, oh no. Fortunately, Derek told her that he had an identical twin, Scott, who was straight.

And even better, he proposed the two of them exchange numbers instead and see where it went.

Top LAD, Derek.

Jill fancied Derek but after he turned out to be gay she decided to go out with his brother - Scott, pictured - instead.

And it seems to have gone very well as the couple have since been on a date and are planning to meet back up once they return to uni after Thanksgiving break.

The teenager shared her romantic tale on Twitter, posting a photograph of the text she received from Derek after their lunchtime encounter.

It read: "So yesterday I gave my number to a cute guy in the dining hall... LMFAOOO."

She later posted a photo of her and Scott together, writing: "Update: went to lunch with the brother. His name is Scott. Will be hanging out again after Thanksgiving break."

Later she added: "We will also be hanging out after Thanksgiving break too."

Derek eventually broke it to her that he wasn't interested but that his brother might be.

Speaking to LADbible, Jill said she isn't great when it comes to speaking to the opposite sex but decided to throw caution to the wind and see what happened.

She said: "He was in the dining all and I don't know how to talk to boys, so I just stared at him.

"He and his friends got up to leave and I thought I missed my shot. I left a few minutes later and Derek and his friends just happened to be lingering in the lobby. After that I was like, 'damn this is my second chance', so I walked up to him and his friends and was just like, 'Sorry I was staring at you earlier, that's awkward, but I just think you're cute. Can I give you my number?'

Jill added: "I was just like, 'F*** it, the worst that's going to happen is that he'll turn me down.'"

And Derek says he noticed her staring at him from across the room.

He said: "I noticed her looking at me a lot and we made eye contact a few times, making it a little awkward.

Jill and Derek are pals now too.

"She then walked up to me and said, 'Hey, sorry if the staring was awkward but I think you're cute so here's my number. My name's Jill, by the way.' And I said, 'No, it wasn't awkward at all - and thank you! My name's Derek.'"

He added: "At first I thought about pretending I was Scott and giving her Scott's number right there, but I just took the number and said thank you."

Now, you might think when Derek proposed the idea of his brother going on a date with a complete stranger, Scott might have had a few reservations. But apparently not.

Derek said: "I asked him and he was totally up for it. They had lunch once and are planning on hanging out when we get back to Iowa."

So there you have it, a modern fairytale. Kind of.

Let's hope it works out.
