A schoolgirl has received an incredible outpouring of support on social media after her mum revealed that her art teacher told her that her painting was 'wrong'.

Gemma Leighton, mum to six-year-old Edie, posted a photo of her daughter's artwork on Twitter, explaining what had happened.

She wrote: "My six-year-old daughter painted this amazing scene at an after school art club.

"Her art teacher told her she had done it wrong?! You can't do art wrong!

"She was so upset as art is her favourite thing to do. Can you please show Edie some support and like her painting?"

And although Edie's art teacher wasn't too supportive, the little girl's painting has caught the attention of more than 144,000 people on Twitter, who have liked the tweet.

She has even had kind words from some famous faces, not least Supernanny Jo Frost, esteemed artist Grayson Perry and singer-songwriter Kimya Dawson:

Gemma said that Edie is made up with the love she's received on social media, and she's even decided to make her own Etsy shop - with the proceeds going to charity - and a Twitter account to post all her artwork.

Speaking to LADbible, Gemma said: "This has meant so much to my little girl.

"She is absolutely thrilled with all of the support and encouragement she has received from across the globe, and also happy that we can help others through art via the Create charity and the Twitter account @ediesartspace.

"Maybe even one day [we can] do an exhibition showcasing all the works of these fabulous little artists."
