A TV presenter and comedian in New Zealand has said she is 'deeply sorry' after trying to make a lolly cake in the appearance of her prime minister.

Laura Daniel's recreation of Jacinda Ardern's face in cake form is absolutely terrifying and the results are not lost on the Seven Sharp presenter.

Writing on social media, Ms Daniel said: "They say don't bake your heroes. But I wanted to try anyway.

"I'm deeply sorry @jacindaardern I truly tried my best with what I had available... it's made from another NZ icon lolly cake."

The post on social media has attracted thousands of likes and even the attention of the Prime Minister.

Jacinda Ardern simply replied with two shocked emojis and that's all that needed to be said.

Others likened the cake face to horror movie scenes and characters.

One person wrote: "You ever seen the movie Saw and see the scary puppet... yeah they look exactly alike."

Another added: "Thank you for this, I didn't want to sleep tonight, so this will really help with that."

One of the big questions from this creation (and there are many) is what the hell the teeth are made from. Most people will be familiar with teeth lollies, but these dentures look shockingly real.

Thankfully Laura explained that with a follow-up, saying: "For anyone wondering about the teeth on the cake... I impersonated Jacinda for a whole year on Television... of course I kept the teeth."

Ms Ardern recently won praise around the world for announcing a 20 per cent pay cut for herself and her ministers.

More than 1.5 million New Zealanders have applied for the government's wage subsidy, which is significant considering the country only has a population of 4.8 million.

As a result, Ms Ardern thought it was only right to accept a smaller wage.

The Prime Minister said: "If there was ever a time to close the gap between groups of people across New Zealand in different positions, it is now.

"I am responsible for the executive branch and this is where we can take action... It is about showing solidarity in New Zealand's time of need."
