A barber has survived a seriously close call with death after he tripped over and landed on is scissors, stabbing himself in the heart.

Steve Silva was rushed straight to hospital after his accident, where he received open heart surgery to save his life.

He'd been cutting a customer's hair at the Boston Barber and Tattoo Company on Friday when he accidentally fell down, before trying to stand up and realising the damage that he'd done to himself.

The owner of the Massachusetts barbershop, Robert Dello Russo, said that upon his arrival at hospital it was discovered that he'd punctured an artery, but had still had an unbelievably lucky escape.

Dello Russo told CBS Boston: "From what I understand, if it had been an inch to the left of the right, he would have been gone."

He explained how the police asked everyone to leave the barbershop immediately until they assessed the security footage as they believed that he had been stabbed.

Whilst that's technically true, there appears to be no crime to answer for.

Dello Russo added: "I mean a guy gets stabbed in the centre of the chest with scissors and the police come and you tell them, yeah he fell on his scissors.

"The story is not believable, so I don't really blame them for thinking that."

It was Steve's first week back on the job.

Dello Russo went on to describe Silva as one of his best employees, and said that he had just returned to work after the pandemic forced them to close.

The customer in the chair at the time, a man called Max Cohen, told WHDH: "He was walking around behind me and then he slipped. I was like oh it's fine, and then I realise he's holding scissors and there's blood on the floor and he goes, 'oh my God I just stabbed myself.'"

He continued: "He texted me [afterwards], he just said thanks for everything. I asked him how he was doing.

"He said he was doing well - and then asked me if I got my haircut finished, because he wasn't quite done yet."

Mr Silva remains in an intensive care ward of the hospital, and a GoFundMe page has been set up to help pay for his medical bills.

So far, around $24,000 (£17,000) has been raised.
