Base Jumper Captures Moment He Nearly Dies After His Parachute Malfunctions On Camera

The man ended up hitting the cliff side on his way down before ending up in a shallow river

A base jumper has shared the heart-stopping moment his parachute malfunctioned as he leapt off the side of a cliff:

The video, which was filmed in Switzerland, showed the man jumping from the cliff only to quickly realise that his canopy was opening facing the cliff (a position I can only assume it shouldn't be facing).

The bloke then found himself twisted underneath the canopy and with no time to react, he hit the cliff before making his (clearly somewhat agonising) way down for about 80 to 90 metres.

There are a lot of painful noises coming from him on his unexpected descent until he lands in a shallow river. Surprisingly the incident left him with no broken bones, despite crashing against the cliff multiple times.

The initial view was great.

Another near-death experience came when an amateur base jumper failed to attach his leg straps - a key part of the safety equipment in the extreme sport.

Leg straps prevent jumpers from accidentally slipping out of the parachute harness - so yeah, they're a pretty big deal.

Professional instructor Chris McDougall spotted the man's error as he was about to fall from a bridge. Luckily he was able to grab him and get him back to safety just seconds before he jumped.

After this happened the man still went and jumped from the bridge.

On his YouTube page, Chris wrote: "How this can happen I do not know but I hope this video will raise awareness to how important it is to pay attention to detail when base jumping.

"So many new jumpers come into this sport thinking it is all about Go Pros and social media and they forget the fundamentals of how serious and dangerous this sport can be if respect is not given to every aspect of it.

"I am glad I saved someone's life but each jumper must have the ability to save their own on each and every jump."

In base jumping, as in all extreme sports, it's important to pay attention to safety procedure and check your equipment before you choose to take any risks. I feel like we don't really need to say that, but apparently we do because of mishaps like this.
