A dad was kicked and attacked by an angry kangaroo while trying to protect his kids on Christmas Day.

A video captured shows Mitchell Robinson's family at South West Rocks, in NSW, Australia, with a kangaroo standing by a building.

As Mr Robinson attempts to shoo the huge male kangaroo away, it approaches him slightly before hopping over to him.

The marsupial then launches into an attack on the dad, hitting him with its paw, before kicking him to the ground.

The family that live in the house said they had seen the kangaroo pottering around for a while, digging holes in their front yard.

Mr Robinson was trying to shield his children from the animal as he tried to get it to move on.

Family friend Tina Grace Rowe told 7News: "It was just staring at him and he picked up something to try and shoo it away and as soon as he did that you could just see that it was going to go at him.

"He was massive. He was a big male kangaroo with a big chest."

But unfortunately, the dad was already at a disadvantage in his duel with the kangaroo, as he had already suffered a broken arm previously.

Thankfully though, Mr Robinson didn't suffer any other injuries during the attack.

After the tragic summer bushfire crisis, wildlife groups say more kangaroos are heading into the suburbs after their natural habitat was ravaged by the fires, leaving them with less grass and food.

In South West Rocks, locals say that the animals are becoming a problem.

People are advised to leave the animals well alone if they happen to come into contact with one, as they can cause serious harm if they feel threatened or scared.

Featherdale Wildlife Park zookeeper Chad Staples said: "They have huge claws on their front hands that they will use to hold on with and then their back legs are all power for kicking, so they are covered with weapons."

Earlier this year, an Aussie bloke managed to capture a high-octane kangaroo brawl on camera, after he spotted them throwing punches at each other outside his bedroom window.

Charlie Riebolge, who hails from Mannum on the Murray River in South Australia, said he found the two kangaroos boxing in his yard and decided to whip out his camera to film them from a safe distance.

The two animals each put up a pretty good fight, leaning back on their tails to give themselves balance to kick each other with the brute force of both legs.

Social media users were as impressed as he was by the action, with some saying it was 'better than Mayweather', while others joked the scenes were 'typically Australian'.

One person said: "Double back foot kick whilst balancing on their tails looks impressive."

Someone else wrote: "Never taking a backward step... this is why they're on our coat of arms."

Another said: "Can it get more Australian than that?"
