Flight With 85 Plumbers On Board Forced To U-Turn Over Faulty Toilets

Flight With 85 Plumbers On Board Forced To U-Turn Over Faulty Toilets

A flight by the airline Norwegian was forced to turn back after a problem emerged mid-flight which all the plumbers on board couldn't fix

All the way back in 1996, Alanis Morisette sang about things being 'ironic', like hitting traffic when you're running late, rain on your wedding day and only finding spoons when you're after a knife. Are these occurances actually ironic or, y'know, just unfortunate coincidences?

Well, if a traffic jam counts as ironic, that moniker would definitely apply to this flight by the low-cost airline Norwegian - which was forced to turn back due to faulty toilets even though 85 of the passengers on board were plumbers.

The Daily Mail reported that this unfortunate incident took place on flight DY1156, which set off from Oslo for Munich this past Saturday morning.

It's not yet been reported what exactly the problem with the loos was. Maybe the toilets were blocked because of weather conditions like this:

The aircraft reached the border with neighbouring Sweden before pilots decided they had to turn back after 20 minutes, spending several minutes circling mid-air over Norway to burn off excess fuel before landing the plane.

All the plumbers on board are unlikely to have been strangers (which really would have been amazing) - instead, it's believed that all the tradesmen were all staff of the same plumbing company

The CEO of Rørkjøp, Frank Olsen, said that while his staff were more than willing to rectify the issue, they were unable to do so because it could only be fixed via the outside of the plane.

"We would have liked to fix the restrooms, but unfortunately it had to be done from the outside and we didn't risk sending a plumber to work at 10,000m," Olsen told the Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet.

"There was a good atmosphere in the plane, what with the irony about the broken toilets."

Engineers at Oslo airport were eventually able to resolve the issue with the plane and the flight successfully made it to Munich on its second attempt the same day.

A spokesperson for Norwegian said: "Flight DY1156 from Oslo to Munich on Saturday 27 January returned to Oslo due to a technical fault with the toilet. The aircraft was repaired and continued with the flight later that day.

"We would like to thank passengers for their patience and would like to apologise for the inconvenience."

At least the plumbers on board found it all amusing. Looks like Alanis might have to re-write the lyrics to her song now:

It's like a plane having to re-navigate
Because the toilets are in such a state
When there's plumbers on board to fix the mistake
Who would have thought? It figures
