Husband Leaves His Own Wedding To Look After His Pet Pig

Husband Leaves His Own Wedding To Look After His Pet Pig

It's a case of "love me, love my pig" - you know, that old chestnut...

Your wedding day is supposed to be the best night of your life, or - at the very least - a good day in your life.

How would you feel if your husband used that night to go to spend time with his prized 31 stone pet pig?

If you answered the way that most people would to that question, just thank your lucky stars that you're not Joanna Durkin.

The 37-year-old from Southport recently married Lee, also 37-years-old, but had to sacrifice a few hours on her wedding day that could have been spent with her husband because he needed to go to visit Parsnip, a huge Kunekune/Vietnamese Pot Bellied pig.

Imagine that.

Now, pigs are smart and can be very affectionate, and there is no doubt that Parsnip is incredibly keen on Lee. Joanna, however, he is less fond of.

What's more, Joanna knows that she must play second fiddle to Parsnip, as her husband is so devoted to his pet. She's learned to deal with that but hopes that one day Parsnip will grow to love her too.

Parsnip is certainly well looked after. He's got his own 25 square metre patch in the garden to roam around as he sees fit. Lee even sits there tickling his tummy with a toothbrush whilst the pair watch Netflix together.

Anyway, back to the wedding. The pair got hitched at Southport's Holy Trinity Church back in March. Lee wore a pink suit and the wedding carried more than one reminder of Lee's love of pigs.

However, no sooner was the ceremony done, Lee was off to comfort his beloved Parsnip. He bailed out for a few hours, so he could look after a pig and left his wife to look after the wedding.

Lee explained: "Joanna understands Parsnip comes first, so she didn't blink an eye.

"She knows if someone came into the house brandishing a knife, I would jump in front of Parsnip first."

Oh, that's totally fine then.

He continued: "Parsnip doesn't really like Joanna.

"To me, he is the cutest thing in the world, but he is a bit of a terror to everyone else.

"He has to be sedated by the vet because he can get a bit violent. He bites a bit so getting Joanna near him is an issue, as he nips her.

"He's okay with me because I have been with him since he was tiny, but for Joanna to get even slightly close to him we have to wait until he is asleep or eating his apple."

Despite all of this, Joanna believes that Lee is still the man for her. She explained that when they got together he made it clear that to love him, you have to love the pig.

She said: "I'd never known of anyone with a pet pig before.

"But I saw then how much Lee adored Parsnip, which made my heart melt.

"I could see how caring and loving Lee was, and how important Parsnip was to him.

"Everything we do is for Parsnip, I knew this would be the case when I got together with Lee and it's not a problem.

"Our wedding night was like any other night to Parsnip, and he needed the food and the company.

"He'd spent all day on his own, so there was never any question that Lee would leave for a while.

"We don't feel like we are sacrificing anything for Parsnip. We are happy if Parsnip is happy, and we love our life as a family."

Well, as long as they are happy...
