A homeless man who found a huge, unusual looking bug on the streets of Greater Manchester is now asking the public to help him identify it.

Yesterday morning (11 July) Tony Porter, who had spent the night outside Stretford Mall, he spotted the bizarre looking insect on the floor and initially thought it was fake but upon closer inspection he discovered it was real and 'on its last legs'.

Tony said: "I found it this morning. I was walking up the street. I've called it Jeffrey the creature." Good name, mate. It looks like a Jeffrey, doesn't it?

He added: "I thought bl**dy hell. I have never seen anything like that in our country. It was on its last legs. It was about to die."

Tony, 26, said he was careful not to touch it in case it was poisonous, so he scooped it using a plastic bottle.

Unfortunately for poor Jeffrey, it died shortly after Tony found it but he's decided to hold on to it until he finds out what it is.

In his quest to unmask Jeffrey's identity, Tony has been asking customers outside Aldi if they could shed any light on the species, but so far, he's had no joy.

Tony said: "I have asked a few people what it is and not one person can tell me what it is. People said 'it shouldn't be in this country'.

"Someone said it looks like an Egyptian beetle. I want someone to tell me what it is.

"It's got different colours on it."

After going to Gregg's for his breakfast, Tony put Jeffrey on a takeaway coffee cup lid.

He said: "It is as big as a Gregg's lid, that's how big it is. If I collected beetles I would put it in a picture frame."

The bug has shades of yellow and green across its body while its feet appear to be darker in colour. It also seems to have some sort of fringe along its hind legs.

If any entomologists happen to be reading this and reckon they know Jeffrey's origins, let us know in the comments.

LADbible has contacted the Royal Entomological Society to see if it has any idea what the bug could be.
