A man who was trying to hide himself to escape from the police accidentally gave himself away when he farted, alerting the police officers to his whereabouts.

You can insert your own puns there - and we're sure you will - but expect a bit of that from here on in.

Anyway, it happened like this - the wanted man was trying to throw police off his scent by hiding in the bushes in a woodland area in Harworth, which is near to Doncaster, on Thursday night (7 May), and probably thought he managed to shake them off, when he accidentally farted.

The police heard the man breaking wind, and were immediately wise to where he was. The 35-year-old man, along with another 30-year-old man who was found hiding behind a fireplace, was arrested and taken into custody.

Here's the woodland the flatulent fugitive took refuge in.

The unidentified farter was arrested after police obtained a warrant because he didn't turn up to another court appearance, and the man who hid in the fireplace was arrested in relation to other matters.

One of the officers who gave chase to the flatulent fugitive said that he couldn't believe his luck, but everything came up trumps in the end.

He said: "I was almost out of wind running but luckily [the suspect] still had some.

"I heard him letting rip and followed the noises to a bush."

Nottinghamshire Police then had a bit of fun when tweeting out about the incident after the arrests were made.

Full disclosure, they've used some of the same fart-based jokes as everyone else has been thinking of.

Yes, we get it.

"Officers have come up trumps after a man broke wind and revealed his hiding place."

Naturally, some of the people who've gotten wind of this online have also been weighing in on this unusual piece of detective work.

One person asked: "Whoever smelt it, dealt it?"

Another person said: "Right pair of farts..."

A bit simplistic, but still good.

However, one person asked the question that will be on everyone's lips after reading this.

They said: "Was it the sound or the smell that gave it away?"

Well, the arrested man will have his day in court to present his case, and perhaps at that point we'll get the answers we crave.
