Police detectives investigating the murder of a woman at an East London flat have said they'd like to speak with a man who was seen wandering through Whitechapel with no clothes on, in connection with the crime.

The naked man was spotted wandering around the area on Sunday, not long after the death of Tiparat Argatu at a flat on Ellen Street that morning.

Forty-three-year-old Argatu died from neck and head injuries inside a property close to where the naked man was spotted.

Nineteen-year-old David Cheres- who is thought to have known the victim - has been charged with her murder. No-one else is being sought in connection with the killing.

However, the police have said they'd like to speak with anyone who spotted the naked man wandering around, as well as anyone who might have seen discarded clothes in the area.

They believe the man was walking naked through Whitechapel between 4.00am and 9.00am on the day of Argatu's murder.

In an appeal for witnesses, Scotland Yard said: "[Officers] wish to speak with anyone who saw this man, or who found clothing discarded near to the scene in Ellen Street."

Cheres, who lives on Ellen Street, appeared at the Old Bailey last week, and will appear there once again charged with Argatu's murder on 16 April.

Argatu was a Thai national, having moved to the UK last September in order to be with her husband, the Metropolitan Police confirmed.

A full witness appeal reads: "Detectives investigating the death of a woman in Whitechapel are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen a naked man walking in the area on the morning of Sunday, 24 January.

"An investigation was launched after police were called to concerns for the welfare of a woman at a property in Ellen Street, Whitechapel at 08:17hrs on Sunday, 24 January.

"The woman - 43-year-old Tiparat (correct spelling) Argatu - was pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem examination confirmed she died from neck and head injuries."

"Tiparat was a Thai national who moved to London in September 2020 to be with her husband.

"A 19-year-old man, thought to have been known to Tiparat but not related to her, was arrested on 24 January near to the scene. He has been charged with the murder. At this stage, nobody else is sought in connection with the investigation.

"Officers believe that a man had been walking naked in the Whitechapel area at some point between approximately 0400hrs and 0900hrs on Sunday, 24 January. They wish to speak with anyone who saw this man, or who found clothing discarded near to the scene in Ellen Street.
