It's sometimes part of a ritual

A Spanish porn star is being investigated by police after another man died after he inhaled the vapour from the venom of a toad in his house.

Nacho Vidal, 46, is named as a suspect and could be charged with manslaughter when photographer Jose Luis Abad died from inhaling fumes from a Colorado River toad near Valencia in July last year.

Vidal, who has been in upwards of 600 adult films, was arrested on Thursday. Mr Abad died at his home in Enguera, in the province of Valencia.

It's believed that he was taking part in a mystic ritual, which involved inhaling vapour given off when the poison is extracted from the toad.

The Spanish Civil Guard said: "Officers began the investigation after the death of a person during a mystical ritual involving the inhalation of vapours from the venom of the bufo alvarius toad.

"At the conclusion of an 11-month investigation, we have been able to establish that an offence of involuntary manslaughter and a public health offence had occurred, allegedly committed by those who organised and presided over the ritual."

The toad is a rare species that originates from the Sonoran Desert, which covers large parts of Mexico, California and Arizona. It has venom which contains a very powerful natural psychedelic substance known as 5-MeO-DMT.

It's a different substance to the drug DMT, and is said to be 4 to 6 times stronger. It also has far less of the visuals characteristic of DMT.

Instead, 5-MeO-DMT is mostly known for its intense perspective shifts and sensory overload.

The effects of the drug have been compared to ayahuasca, which is a strong hallucinogenic creation from the Amazon, which is often consumed as part of a shamanic ritual.

Vidal's lawyer, Daniel Salvador, denied the porn star had acted as a shaman in the ritual.

Speaking to Spanish news agency EFE, he said: "Nacho is very upset by the death of this person, but he considers himself to be innocent.

"With all due respect to the dead man and his family, Nacho maintains that the consumption [of the venom] was completely voluntary."

Nacho Vidal, whose real name is Ignacio Jordà González, put a YouTube video in 2016 where he described the healing effects of the 5-MeO-DMT.

Another man and a woman, aged 37 and 50, were also arrested - all of them are of Spanish nationality.
