South Korean Football Team Pelted With Eggs After Returning From World Cup

The South Korean football team have had a mixed week to say the least. To begin with, they beat the world champions Germany by a scoreline of 2-0 to record a famous victory and knock their opponents out of the World Cup - the first time they'd left the tournament this early since 1938.

However, even that joy was bittersweet as they were themselves eliminated from the tournament in Russia because Sweden hammered Mexico 3 - 0. A real shame after such a big effort.

Anyway, you'd think that their brave performance would get them some love from their native fans back home, but once they arrived back at the airport in South Korea they were pelted with eggs and (bizarrely enough) Union Jack cushions at a photocall.

Granted, the vast majority of people who gathered to welcome the team back at Incheon International Airport seemed happy enough to see them, but there always seems to be a small element of idiots at these things, doesn't there?

Luckily, none of the team were actually hit by the cushions - how much damage could they do anyway? - and the eggs also failed to find their intended target.

The team's security guards had their work cut out for them, though. They were running around trying to clear away the crap that was being thrown, a task that is definitely easier with cushions than eggs.

The team's manager spoke to the crowd and accepted that they were all disappointed to have been booted out of the tournament at such an early stage. Shin Tae-yong said: "I didn't want to come home until July and it's disappointing to be back home in June.

"I'd like to thank our fans for their love and support. Without our fans, we wouldn't have been able to create the miracle that we did."

Star player, Son Heung-min, also said: "Thank you to all of you who came today. I am sorry to our fans that we didn't live up to our promise of reaching the knockout stage but I think we all saw some hope from the win over Germany.

"But we won't get carried away with that bit of success, and we'll continue to work hard."

Weirdly enough, this sort of occurrence isn't exactly new. Back in 2014, when the team were again sent packing at the earliest opportunity, they arrived back from Brazil and were pelted with toffee sweets.

There is a saying in Korea, 'go eat toffee', which basically means 'get lost'. I mean, there are definitely worse things to be pelted with.
