I don't know about you but the main objective of any trip to the toilets at my high school was to spend as little time in there as possible.

Between the damp wall of ammonia that clung to your eye-balls as soon as you stepped foot in that godforsaken place, and the haunting aroma coming from the cubicles, it was all about self preservation - get in, get out, and try not to touch anything you don't absolutely have to.

However, students at a university in the United States have instead embraced their facilities and created a shrine to It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star and funny man Danny DeVito.

Nope, that's not creepy at all.

It was revealed last month when a student at SUNY - surely that's a sign right there - Purchase University, in New York, tweeted the Matilda actor asking him to come and visit the secret room, which was hidden behind a paper towel dispenser.

She wrote: "@DannyDeVito yo. My college has a secret room that worships you. Come visit!!!!!!!!! SUNY Purchase come through - me and my friends."

A video was then shared online, which showed students walking through the whole in the wall, which led to a dark, cramped room, with a photograph of DeVito hanging on the wall, above a miniature figurine of the actor.

After reading about the secret room, the movie star replied yesterday, on the eve of his 74th birthday, thanking students for the kind - if albeit ominous - gesture.

He wrote on Twitter: "Your shrine honors me. My heart is filled with love and garbage.Tomorrow, as you may know, is my name day. Do something that makes you feel good. Above all be kind to each other. Pick up trash, recycle, and be aware of plastics in the ocean."

According to reports, the man behind the alter was sophomore Phillip Hosang, who allegedly discovered the hole in a men's bathroom on the campus's visual arts building after hearing rumours about it.

He told Vice: "I walked in there, and I thought that this would be just a really great place to put some weird thing that people could find. And from there I was just trying to figure out what I should do with it.

"Because of all the trash - if you know Always Sunny, you know that Danny DeVito is known as like the trash man - I was like, 'This is just the perfect person to go with. He's just weird enough that people would accept that this was a thing.'"

However, since the photos and videos went viral university bosses have clamped down and sealed off the secret hole, citing 'safety reasons'.

But this hasn't dampened the spirits of the student body who have now begun a petition to have Danny speak at he school's commencement ceremony.

The school has sealed the hole because of health and safety regulations.

The petition says: "After the discovery of a shrine dedicated to actor-producer-director Danny DeVito, Purchase College has been the subject of massive social and news media attention.

"While the new clout has been appreciated, we students still find the school to be lacking in many areas; structurally sound buildings, clean water. and (among other things) a speaker for our 2019 commencement ceremony.

"Danny DeVito embodies everything Purchase College stands for. He is heavily involved in the arts, frequently donates to various charities, and promotes free and open thought.

"Also, he directed Matilda (1996), which will forever be criminally underrated.

"School officials have since invited DeVito to observe and admire the shrine, but seeing as they've also destroyed the place of prayer and sealed off the area we students see only one solution:

"Request Danny DeVito as the Purchase College Commencement Speaker for 2019."

Happy Birthday, Danny.
