Village Awakens To Discover Someone Has Stolen Almost An Entire Pavement

There's a cyclepath on the loose!

The good people living in the village of Storrington in West Sussex were shocked and dismayed to discover that someone came along and stole almost all of a pavement in the night.

Yes, someone - or, more likely, some people - came along and lifted off a whole heap of flagstones before carting them off to somewhere else.

Seriously, what would you actually use stolen paving slabs for, apart from laying down some paving in another location? The mind boggles.

No-one knows yet who was responsible for the crime, which took place overnight on 1 March, but - as you can see - they've caused quite a fair bit of damage.

The claim the paving stones were stolen was made by James Wright, a local councillor for the Storrington and Washington ward of Horsham District Council.

Alan Stainer

He told the West Sussex County Times: "It looks like they were stolen overnight which is obviously shocking."

Well, they didn't just get up and walk off, did they?

Wright continued: "The police are aware and the Horsham District Council community team are assisting the police and the parks team who are responsible for the car park are on their way down to make it safe."

Strangely enough, this isn't the first time that a load of paving slabs in the surrounding area have been nicked.

Mr Wright added that a similar incident took place in nearby Steyning just last month.

A spokesperson for Horsham District Council said: "The Council believes that the paving slabs may have been stolen overnight.

"We are currently looking at CCTV footage of the area and have reported this incident to Sussex Police. In the meantime we are making the area safe for car park users."

The theft was brought to the wider public after a photograph of the spot where the slabs used to lie was shared on Reddit.

Naturally, it brought out some jokers.

One person wrote: "Hope this doesn't pave the way to more theft."

Another said: "Hopefully the police leave no stone unturned."

A third commented: "Truly, crime in the area has gone down an unprecedented path. Will nothing be done to curb this criminal behavior?"

Alright, very good everyone.

Alan Stainer

Well, let's just hope that the police can cobble together a solution and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Someone has to curb this sort of criminal behavior to cement the rule of law and order.

OK, sorry.

A statement from Sussex Police reads: "At 11am on Tuesday 2 March police received a report that sometime between Sunday night and Tuesday morning a quantity of York Stone paving had been dug up and stolen from a council car park in Ryecroft Lane, Storrington.

"Anyone with information can contact Sussex Police either online at https://www.sussex.police.uk/contact/af/contact-us/ or by calling 101, quoting serial 390 of 02/03."
