The teens found the suitcase on a beach in Seattle, with the city's police department confirming that they are investigating the incident.

Two items of luggage were discovered, with the video above showing them filled with black bin bags. They were taken there after using an app called Randonautica, which directs users to a randomly generated set of co-ordinates.

The people who found the bag could be seen opening it, joking that they could have found money, but their excitement soon turns to fear as they realise from the smell what they must have found.

The video footage showed the terrifying encounter, which took place at Duwamish Head in the Washington State city on Saturday.

They only realised it was actually a dead body when police posted the news online - they had been seen driving past the 'crime scene' after finding the case.

Sharing on TikTok, UghHenry wrote: "Something traumatic happened that changed my life."

It went on to explained: "We found this black suitcase. We were joking that maybe the suitcase would have money...[But] the smell was overwhelming."

A statement read: "Detectives are currently investigating after several bags containing human remains were located near the water in the 1100 block of Alki Avenue SW this afternoon.

"Police responded after receiving a call of a suspicious bag on the beach. Another bag was located in the water. Once the contents were determined to be remains, detectives responded to begin their investigation.

"Harbor Patrol is assisting on the call, and detectives will work closely with the King County Medical Examiner's Office as the investigation proceeds. This remains an active and on-going investigation."

According to its website, the Randonautica app is made to put the user at the centre of 'an adventure story yet to be written'.

It reads: "By using the app, the user can break from their mundane day-to-day and take a journey of randomness into the world around them. Your mind is your guide as you observe and view the world differently."
