A guy has claimed that he saw a New York carriage horse collapse to the ground with exhaustion after its driver 'forced' it to run faster to make a green light.

Bogdan Paul Angheluta said he was leaving a nightclub at 2am on Friday when he heard the driver shouting at the horse before it collapsed in the middle of the busy street.

The guy responsible for looking after the horse, which is called Norman, said the horse had just tripped over. However, witness Bogdan said that this isn't true because Norman had laboured breathing when he was on the ground, the New York Post reports.

Bogdan stepped in to try and calm the horse down by cradling his head before a gang of 'five or six guys came from the stables' with water and took him away.

A spokesperson for the carriage industry told the New York Post that Norman tripped himself, because he's 'kind of a klutz'. But Bogdan isn't convinced and has forwarded the pictures onto an animal rights group.

Poor Norman is said to be doing fine after his fall.
