Dog Chews Off Paw To Escape Being Chained Under House For Five Years

Dog Chews Off Paw To Escape Being Chained Under House For Five Years

Poor Treya.

Terrier dog Treya had been locked up in the back of a house in St Louis, Missouri for years. Her owner had been murdered and she was left to fend for herself.

But, after a while, her chain became tightly wrapped around her paw and that meant she could barely move.

Her neighbours wanted to help but could only provide hay for warmth in the cold winters and enough food to keep her alive.

Eventually, Treya saw the only way out was by chewing her own paw off. She was rescued by the Stray Rescue of Saint Louis and the owners say it was difficult taking her in.

On the website, it says: "She feared humans from lack of socialisation being isolated in her own private agonising world. But Donna eventually was able to rescue the elusive and terrified white terrier.

"Once back at our trauma centre, besides the obvious missing foot, we discovered she also has heartworm and a wicked case of a flea infestation. Her emotional wounds matched in intensity of her physical ones."

They say that Treya warmed to another stray in their care called Pinky and that greatly helped her rehabilitation. Treya is now in a medical foster home that provides the comfort and care that she needs.

The rescue centre is kindly asking for donations to help rehabilitate Treya. It says the heartworm treatment will cost at least $1,200 (£927) and it is also hoping to get a prosthetic for her missing paw, which could be as much as $3,000 (£2,317).

Stray Rescue founder Randy Grim hopes people who see this story won't hesitate to contact authorities the next time they see an animal in distress.

It's reminiscent of a story in South Yorkshire where a man described as 'callous' dumped a dog in a park because he didn't want to take care of her. Tess was later found with just food, a lead, and an emotionless letter disowning the terrier.

Luckily, the 12-year-old was rescued by Alan Webster, who runs the South Yorkshire Pet Ambulance. He gave her some food before uploading a picture to social media in a bid to find her owner.

Alan has written on the South Yorkshire Pet Ambulance Facebook page: "As for the scumbag who dumped her - we now know who he is, and have ruled out any wrongdoing of the original owner who as gone to the States to live."

Tess was being cared for at Dogs Trust in Leeds before she was put up for adoption three weeks ago.
