Four-Year-Old Boy Dies In Rare 'Dry Drowning' Case

Tragic.

Many parents worry about their children swimming and whether they'll be competent enough to stay above the surface. But many would be unaware that there is a danger that can linger days after a person gets out of the water.

That's the tragedy that the Delgado family has faced after the death of their four-year-old boy. Frankie Delgado went swimming in a dyke in Texas and all was well. But he started showing signs of an upset stomach, vomiting and diarrhoea.

His condition declined rapidly and he died just four days after his swim.

Doctors have told the family that young Frankie had fluid in his lung which caused him to go through what's called dry drowning.

Frankie's older sister, Desiree, says: "There are no words to describe how heartbroken we are over the passing of baby Frankie. He was only four years old, he had so much life to live. He was loved by so many people, his love for baseball was endless. The world lost a beautiful soul.

"Such a wonder of life. Such a joyful spirit. Gone too soon. My family and I are asking for help in this difficult time of need. I'm asking for prayers and donations in hopes to help my family grieve without the worry of expenses."

A fundraising page has been set up to cover the cost of Frankie's funeral. Amazingly, more than $30,000 (£23,167) has been raised in just three days.

In response to the outpouring of online support, Desiree says: "We would like to thank each and every one of you that have donated thus far. We have reached our original goal and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We can now lay our baby boy down to rest.

"With the remaining balance and any money that is donated further, will help pay extra expenses such as his headstone. Again, we thank you all so much for all your kind words and donations."

Dry drowning is incredibly rare, and only accounts for one to two percent of the number of drownings in the US. Some of the symptoms to look out for include coughing, chest pain, trouble breathing and feeling extremely tired.
