It's been announced that Aidan Gillen, best known for playing Petyr 'Littlefinger' Baelish in HBO drama Game of Thrones, has signed up to the fourth season of Peaky Blinders.

The 48-year-old actor has previously played roles in The Wire, Queer as Folk and The Dark Knight Rises, and although it's not yet known who Gillen will be it's safe to assume from his previous roles he'll be up to no good.

The cast for the next season of the show now includes himself and Adrien Brody, alongside Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy - some big names for a BBC drama.

Series four is expected to air in October this year, with elements of the plot already revealed.

According to news website Deadline: "Season four will kick off when Tommy receives a mysterious letter on Christmas Eve and realises the Peaky Blinders are in danger of annihilation.

"As the enemy closes in, he flees his country house and returns to the streets of Small Heath, Birmingham where a desperate fight for survival begins."

Earlier this month Cillian Murphy was spotted on the streets of Liverpool as filming for Peaky Blinders got under way.

Speaking earlier this year, the star credited good writing for the show's success, as he said: "People in America love it, people in Australia love it, people in Poland love it - it's mad."

Peaky Blinders' creator, Steven Knight, told Deadline: "I'm very, very excited because I'm just completing [the writing of] episode six of series four, which again I think is the best yet.

"And I'm loving it and it's not like work, it's not like a labour, I love doing it, and the boys are coming back and they're loving the scripts, and we start shooting in March."

He also confirmed that Tom Hardy would be reprising his role as gang leader Alfie Solomons, saying: "We couldn't do it without Alfie."

Knight told the BBC: "Tom Hardy was very keen to return. He's an actor in high demand but he made sure he would be available for Peaky Blinders. I know how he feels. This is my hobby - writing and directing films are the day job, but Peaky Blinders is what I do because I love it.

A fifth series of the show has also already been announced meaning the gang will be around for a while yet.
