When the latest Rick and Morty season aired its first episode, a demonic looking Rick told Morty he wouldn't rest until he got his hands on the fast food chain's Szechuan sauce.

Since then fans of the show have been calling for its comeback and now it has happened, well sort of.

Last week, Justin Roiland told reporters at Comic-Con that McDonald's was stepping up to the plate and said they would deliver him a jug of the promotional condiment.

And now McDonald's has made good on its promise, delivering it in a massive, orange, secure box with the words 'Dimension C-1998M' on top.

Inside, someone named 'Chef Mike' left a message which read: "Justin, we finally did it. It took months, but we've finally brought back some Szechuan sauce.

"We'll spare you the physics, but it turns out Dimension C-1998M is a dimension where it's always 1998. 1998 every day. No smartphones, no social media. It's a weird, scary place. But they've got Szechuan sauce on the regular menu.

"So here we are with some precious cargo - the Szechuan sauce you remember and some sou-venirs from some of the dimensions we tried along the way.

"We wish we could've brought back more sauce through, but we couldn't risk keeping a portal like that open. Think about it, if you knew in 1998 that McDonald's would have All Day Breakfast in 2017, would you really want to stay in 1998? Of course not. If we left the portal open, we'd have puka shells, bucket hats, and boy bands as far as the eye could see. It's too risky, even for sauce as delicious as this.

"A few lucky fans will also get to experience the glory, but the first bottle in this dimension is for you. Stay Schwifty."

Justin responded with a simple: "Holy shit."

Holy shit, indeed.

The nearly two-kilogram (64oz) bottle hilariously reads: "For use in McDonald's restaurants (C-1998M) during limited promotional window, and then maybe again twenty years later. DO NOT SERVE to mad scientists travelling with their teenage grandson; potential non-scientist versions of mad scientists from an alternate dimension; and/or Jerry."

McDonald's has been under a lot of pressure to bring back the sauce, which it originally brought out as a promotional tool for Disney's Mulan. A petition has even been launched, which has garnered nearly 37,000 signatures.

After the episode aired, it also sparked a frenzy of people trying to make their own version of the sauce. And even more incredibly, a guy who found a packet of the original managed to sell it on eBay for $14,700 (£11,500).

In the post, he said: "After watching the recent episode of Rick and Morty I went online to see if it was worth anything. Turns out it was. Also, this comes with a packet of wasabi as well.

"I hope somebody who wants to eat some 20-year-old gnarly sauce gets this. I would prefer not to sell it to a collector."

Now, nearly four months since the episode aired, Justin Roiland has finally got his hands on it.
